Building Visualizations

Now that we've discussed word choice, let's talk about how to build images in the mind. Visual imagery is powerful in hypnosis, and may even be the fundamental. A recent neuroimaging study suggested “the role of mental imagery areas appears to be central under hypnosis.”[40 ]

Goal

The first step is to choose what you're trying to accomplish. When we get into erotic play we'll have more discussion of the specific types of visualization to support eroticization, roleplay, etc. The key idea here is that you need to figure out your goal, that is what you want to accomplish with the visualization. Usually, this is going to be a feeling or some sort of action. For a roleplay visualization, it might be “you are taken by force by pirates,” while for eroticization it might be “you are triggered to orgasm by my black boot.”

Choose your key images

Our first step is choosing the key images we want to present. Above we have one key image that is very clear. But what will our key images be for pirates? It helps if we know whether our partner envisions pirates as dark, stinking thieves with savage grins or dapper gentlefolk with lace cuffs. Who is their favorite pirate? What is their favorite action scene?

Sometimes we know, sometimes we have to pull from the canon of examples to guess. As hypnotists, one thing that we’ve found it that it is helpful to know a lot of things. The more things you know, the more media you are familiar with, the more stories you can invoke the better a chance that you can make some sort of connection.

Let’s say that our pirate scene is to be a dark and humiliating rape fantasy. What details can we fix that might be powerful? Perhaps our lead pirate has the stench of rum on their breath and cold sea-grey eyes? What qualities will we focus on in regards to the boot? The shine so deep that it shows color? The scent of leather or PVC?

Disgusting imagery

Be careful about imagery that might provoke disgust unless you’re sure it is going to go where you want. Above, perhaps despite the genre faithfulness, your pirate should not have a mouthful of yellowed, broken, teeth. That’s not a universal rule. We know at least one partner who would be down for a detailed description of the maggots oozing from the eye socket of the zombie that was restraining them with its slimy black hand. But go easy on the disgusting details until you’re certain that your partner is into them. A lot of more colorful genres that could be seen as “disgusting,” say tentacle porn, are usually presented in a stylized, animated, format. The partner who really wants that hot tentacle rape scene may not be counting on you invoking the smell of rotten calamari even if the core idea is hot to them.

There has been research into the relationship between disgust and sexual arousal.[41 ] Some findings suggest that disgust decreases measurably as arousal increases.
